Description: South Africa Emergency issue Matabeleland postage stamp currency cards, set of 5; 3 Pence, 6 Pence (2 varieties), 1 Shilling and 2 Shillings. All signed on back by Marshall Hole and issued during the Anglo-Boer War. In Bulawayo during the Anglo-Boer War there was a shortage of coins to pay African labourers, so the serving Government Secretary and Civil Commissioner, Marshall Hole, authorised the issue of small cards bearing British South Africa Co postage stamps which were stamped on the back with his signature. They circulated between 1-8-1900 and 1-10-1900. Paper toned, some marks, corner torn to 1 Shilling. Scarce and rarely seen. (5 notes total).   USED

Transitional issue, Obv sea turtle with plain shell, thin collar and small legs, Rev delineated into five incuse segments. Aegina was where the first Western coins were minted in the 6th century BC. Its geographical and economic location made it a major trading centre at the crossroads between Euboea, Athens, Corinth and the Peloponnese.    aFINE

Description: Ancient Greece Kingdom of Thrace silver Drachm Apollonia Pontika N/D (480-450 BC) (14mm; 2.81g) (SNG BM Black Sea-153/6). Obv: Facing gorgoneion; Rev: upright anchor, crayfish under right fluke. In 342/1 BC, Philip II attacked and conquered Apollonia as well as other towns in Thrace, thereby incorporating these areas into the Macedonian realm. The famous Gorgon/Anchor silver drachms of Apollonia were struck in the period preceding this event, when the city needed to produce coinage to finance its defense against the impending Macedonian invasion. Philips conquest brought a close to the citys autonomous silver coinage, as no issue subsequent to these was ever minted.   VF
